A tap dance basic is a buffalo. Tap expert, Kaleena Miller will explain how to properly execute a buffalo in this video.

The basics of a buffalo is leap, shuffle, leap. You may have also heard it be described as step, shuffle, back. Even though you may think of a leap as a big leap that takes you across the floor, a leap is any move where you shift weight from one foot to the other. The goal for a buffalo is to stay on the balls of your feet throughout this move. You want to try not to stomp on your foot, or let your heel down at all.

If you want to move to the left, your weight will start on your right foot. First, you will leap onto your left foot. Next, you will shuffle with your right foot. You will finish by leaping back to your right foot with your left foot in a position similar to coupe in the front. If you want to move to the right, you will just reverse it. This means you would start standing with the weight on your left foot. First, you will leap onto your right foot. Next you will shuffle with your left foot. You will finish by leaping back onto your left foot. The signature to a buffalo is the L-shaped hook in the front. You should find this flexed position at the end of every buffalo.

A buffalo is often used to travel across the floor. This could be done in warm ups before class begins, or it could be done in a tap dance. Either way, this is an important move that any tap dancer should practice and eventually be able to execute properly.
