Finishing barre with a nice stretch is very important to keep your muscles loose and ready to do work in center. To see a barre stretch, watch ballet expert Elizabeth Quinn Welch in this video.
You will begin facing the barre with your right foot front. You will slowly develop your right leg to the top of the barre to cambre forward slowly. Next, you will lift your upper body and cambre back. You then will lift your leg up from the barre to extend it to the side to close to a fifth position facing the barre. You will slowly develop your right leg to the top of the barre to cambre to the right slowly and then to the left. You then will lift your leg up from the barre to extend it to the side to close to a back fifth position. You will develop your back leg to arabesque, stretch down to the floor and then cambre back. Next, you will penche slowly and bring it around to finish in fifth position.
If you want more of an intense stretch, you can put your leg on the top barre. If flexibility is something your struggle with, it’s best to keep your leg at the bottom barre. Stretching at the barre after ballet is important to keep your muscles loose and warm. You gain most of your flexibility when your muscles are already warm since they are more limber. If you want to become more flexible, you should really deepen your stretches at the barre.
