There are many ways to teach an improv class. In this video, dance experts Adina Pajak and Ali Geraets will explain the importance of improving and all the different ways to improv.

Improv should done from a very young age. Improv helps to build confidence and the ability to create something. Improv can be interpreted in three different ways. The first is musicality. This involves trying to make the music come through your body. The second is emotional. This involves emoting to the audience and trying to get people to connect with you. The third is experimental. This involves movement quality that is different than anything you’ve done before. Improv is all about finding what works for your body and trying to grow and evolve as a dancer.

Experimental involves creating something different for students to try. One tip is to give the dancer a challenge such as removing the use of a body part, staying on the ground or keeping your legs straight. You want to limit movement that could potentially make something beautiful.

Musicality is something that is extremely important to dancers, but is also something many dancers struggle with. This is a great drill to help dancers to work on just musicality since they are the ones creating the choreography. This gives dancer the opportunity to dance to any of the beats they hear, whether that be the vocals or the drums.

Emotional execution should be based off what you’re feeling and the movement should connect with the audience. The littlest things, such as posture, can emote the most feelings. This type of improv can also include a moment. This means to allow the audience to feel what you are feeling, it can be as simple as a look or a reach. You can have the dancers do this with many different types of emotions.

Think of standing out in improv class and doing something different than everyone else around you. You should really be focusing on trying something new and bettering yourself as a dancer.
